Goldenrod

This plant has had a tough time earning respect in Alabama.

Goldenrod was named Alabama’s first state flower in 1927, but in the 1950s, the editor of The Greenville Advocate newspaper suggested that was bad for tourism, since the plant was “nothing more than a roadside weed.”

It’s true that Goldenrod is often mistaken for Ragweed, since they bloom at the same time.  But don’t blame your seasonal allergies on Goldenrod!
