Pitcher Plant

William Bartram’s illustration of the pitcher plant captures it in bloom, along with a few companion critters.

Carnivorous pitcher plants use nectar and bright colors to lure insects inside, and after the bugs fall into the digestive fluid, lunch is served!

Alabama has more species of the pitcher plant than anywhere else in the world, two of which are endangered.

Visit the Donald E. Davis Arboretum at Auburn University to view their impressive collection and learn about efforts to restore the pitcher plant population in habitats throughout the state.
